After launching a helicopter on Mars for the first time in the world, NASA has recently made a series of successes with the production of breathing oxygen on Mars.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said on Apr. 21 on a Mars exploration mission that it can convert carbon dioxide from Mars' atmosphere into pure oxygen that can be breathed through a device called " MOXIE "(Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment) inside the body of the Perseverance probe that landed on Mars on Feb. 19.

The device can produce approximately 5 grams of oxygen, or the equivalent of about 10 minutes of astronaut breathing.


This is the first successful experiment in extracting natural resources from other planets' environments for human use.

MOXIE is designed to produce up to 10 grams of oxygen per hour. As proof, the scientists plan to use the device at least nine more times over the next two years under different conditions and speeds.

MOXIE works through electricity, which uses high heat to separate oxygen atoms from carbon dioxide molecules, which make up about 95% of the Martian atmosphere, with the other 5% comprised primarily of nitrogen and argon molecules.

While the amount of oxygen on Mars is only very small, it is essential to exploring Mars. It is both used for astronaut breathing and is an essential component of spacecraft fuel, which is required in large quantities.

According to NASA, sending four astronauts up from the surface of Mars will cost approximately 15,000 pounds (7 metric tons) of rocket fuel, plus 55,000 pounds (25 metric tons) of oxygen.
